Located on the border between Canada and the United States, Niagara Falls is one of the most iconic natural wonders in North America. Spanning a total length of 56 kilometers (35 miles), the falls consist of three separate waterfalls: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls.
The Three Components
Each component has its unique characteristics:
- Horseshoe Falls : Also known as Canadian Falls, this is the largest and most spectacular of the three. Measuring 792 meters (2,600 feet) in width www.niagaraonline.casino and 51 meters (167 feet) in height, it’s the central attraction.
- American Falls : Located on the American side, it measures 336 meters (1,105 feet) wide but only 21 meters (69 feet) high due to rock formation that reduced its flow.
- Bridal Veil Falls : The smallest of the three falls is located in New York State and stretches across a width of about 24 meters (79 feet).
Formation and Geography
Niagara Falls was formed during the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago. As massive glaciers carved through the landscape, they created valleys along what would become Lake Erie’s shoreline. Over time, water from these newly formed lakes eroded the rock face until it reached its current height.
The falls are situated near where two continental plates meet – the North American and African tectonic plate junction. Here lies an area called a rift valley or a zone of structural weakness in the Earth’s crust which played a significant role in creating Niagara Falls over thousands of years through constant erosion by water from Lake Erie above.
Geology
The falls are essentially formed when water pours down 99 meters (326 feet) off the escarpment, known as the Great Escarpment. It follows that much more rock existed above before glaciers polished it out but remnants remain beneath Horseshoe Falls in a deep trench known simply as Queenston shales.
When this layer eventually gets dissolved by water and removed altogether through sublimation (turning directly into vapor), then falls may rise further up, forming higher cliff faces like what happened around 200 million years ago when they went right across top – an idea sometimes called “up-slope fall”.
